How to run back-up games WITHOUT a modchip
Right. here is what you will need :

*A PSX with the Parallel I/O port (Tends to be earlier models, models after 1998 tend to not have this port)
*A cheat cartridge - Preferably PS hacker (Alternatively badged as Dragon hacker), Ive also tested this on the XplorerFX
*Any official PSX title - Dosent have to be the same game, just any official game from the same region as the PSX
*Your burned game - Obviously
*A spring - This is to allow the PSX's CD drive to continue reading while the disc drive is open, at one end you should put a piece of plastic. Needs to be wider than the lump at the back of the CD lid

How to do it :

Here is what you do, first insert the official PSX title and put the spring at the back of the console (Looping one end round the lump, and the other end pressed onto the button below it). Then, put the cheat cartridge in the parallel port and make sure the switch is in the "on" position. Then, boot up the console. The system will boot the cheat cartridge, and start reading the disc. Then, once the disc has stopped reading, remove the official disc and place your burned game onto the CD drive. Then, just select "start game" (Make sure you have no cheats enabled, as it will start looking for that specific game) and the game should boot.

Will add images once i find the charger for my camera!

I have an earlier cheat cartridge, a 2.2 or 2.1 gameshark, not sure. Also a newer one, the 3.0 gameshark. Would these work as well.

Would IMGBURN provide for a good disc burning program for burning PSX backups to be played on the PSX? If so, what settings on IMGBURN would I use for that?

Thank You, yes, would ImgBurn be a good disc burning utility for PSX backups? What settings do you have to dial-in for PSX backups on ImgBurn?
