Basically I don't have my original Playstation anymore but I do have a PAL PS2-Slim with the sensors taped back to play backup PSX games. I noticed that NTSC region games only play in 3 quarters of the screen. So looking for a solution I found this.
Here's how to use it:-
*After blocking the sensors on your PS2-Slim
*Insert an original PSX game
*Disc swap at the old PS screen and put the region switch disc in
*Set option to PAL
*Hit start game
*Insert the backup game you wish to play and hit X
*The game should now play in the correct video mode.
(not sure if this works the other way round ie. PAL->NTSC
I'd imagine it does)
