Guys this despite the size this works better when burned to a dvd rather than cd. Japan only release, Monster World Complete Collection, aka the Wonder Boy series, is simply a fantastic retro collection. It contains most versions of all 6 Monster World games including the "overseas" English versions. Extras include artwork, sound tests, scanned manuals for all home versions and even sheet music! Some games have suspend options and the arcade games let you record replays and the first two games have recorded super plays you can watch. Display options include everything from true lo-res to 480p complete with filtering options. It's too bad many other retro compilations don't allow you to play in the original games resolutions like this. All games are emulated and pretty spot on although a few sound effects feel a bit off here and there. The series is comprised mostly of platformers, but they are incredibly varied in how they play. This is really one of my favorite series ever and greatly influenced the cartoon style I draw in. The only thing really missing from this are the Turbografx versions of the games and oddly, the US Sega Master System version of Wonder Boy in Monster Land. The Turbo ones are easy to understand though. Westone, the developers of Wonder Boy, licensed out the games to Hudson, but since Sega owned the Wonder Boy name the titles, graphics and characters were modified. So even though they're really the Monster World games, Sega had nothing to do with them. Not sure why the SMS version of the 2nd game was omitted. Maybe they lost the code to it? Here's the complete list with descriptions and confusing titles: Wonder Boy (1986) [System 1, Sega Mark III, Game Gear [JPN], Game Gear [USA], SG-1000] If you've ever played Adventure Island on the NES, you've played this, but instead of Master Higgins, you're a blond island boy. This game is the original, Westone licensed the game to Hudson but changed the characters since Sega had the rights to Wonder Boy. That series spun off into it's own thing on the NES. Still fun, but hasn't held up all that well. As if the whole series didn't already have the most confusing naming scheme ever (see below), the US GameGear port was retitled Revenge of Drancon for some unknown reason. Wonder Boy in Monster Land (1987) [System 2, Sega Mark III] This time around, Wonder Boy dons a sword, shield and armor in an adventure game. It started as an arcade game so you're under a strict time limit which can get a bit frustrating. Secrets are everywhere in this game and finding them is key to finishing it. Fairly archaic by today's standards but actually stills holds up kinda well. Pity about the missing US SMS version, there's a portion where you have to answer questions and it's tough without knowing Japanese. Also released on PC Engine as Bikkuriman World. Wonder Boy III Monster Lair (198 [System 16, Mega Drive] This time, they combined the original Wonder Boy with a shmup. You're forced to scroll while running and jumping, but can shoot bullets from you're sword. Like WB, you must collect fruit to fill you're depleting life meter, but there are also time-limited power-ups giving you different kinds of shots. Boss levels seat you on a flying dragon for a true shmup experience. Lots of fun, some great imaginative graphics and 2-player co-op. Also released on the Turbo CD as Monster Lair. Monster World II (1989) aka Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap [Game Gear [JPN], Game Gear [UE], Master System] This is one fantastic game! You start off at the end of WB in Monster Land similar to what Symphony of the Night did. Once you defeat the boss, you're cursed and become a Lizard Man. The game has a kind of Metroidvania style where you'll travel the land and assume different animal forms until you finally become human again. This game was known as Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap in the US and Europe and never got a Master System (Mark III) release in Japan. The Mark III had an FM sound chip in it that the Master System lacked and many Japanese games had far superior soundtracks. Oddly enough, there's an FM version in this game despite no Japanese version ever being released and it's really, really good. In the US, this was originally Wonder Boy III, since the real WBIII: Monster Lair was never released here. Also released on the PC Engine as Adventure Island (confusing names, no?) and Dragon's Curse on Turbo. Wonder Boy V: Monster World III (1989) aka Wonder Boy in Monster World [Mega Drive, Genesis, Master System] My favorite in the series. This one ditches the animal forms, but gives you helper companions and better variety of weapons and magic. It still has a slight Metroidvania feel, but I always thought of it as more of a side scrolling Zelda. Truly fantastic artwork and better level design than MWII. Too bad it's a little on the short side. Europe got a Sega Master System version of it that was never released in the US or Japan. Unfortunately, in converting the sprites, they somehow hosed the reach of the hero's sword making the game unnecessarily frustrating. Also released on the Turbo CD as Dynastic Hero. Monster World IV (1994) [Mega Drive] The final game in the series which was never released outside of Japan (unless you count GameTap, but it's still untranslated). This one drops the Wonder Boy name for a good reason, the main character is a girl. This is probably one of the best looking Genesis games ever made. Great animation and design. It has a very Arabian flair which feels a little out of place in the Monster World series, but the rest of the locales and monsters are right at home. There is a fan translated ROM of it floating around the internets which I've never played. I'm hoping someone manages to insert the script into this collection, but it apparently coded the games directly in and doesn't use ROMs. |
